This is a far cry from even 5 years ago when celebrities wanted to avoid the public eye and their weddings and children were completely off limits. There are stories of body doubles, fake weddings and even body guards firing at paparazzi to keep their weddings completely private.
Why have things changed? Reality shows started the trend back in 2000 with who wants to marry a millionaire, which turned out to be a sham because the groom had a restraining order against him, filed by his ex-wife. Then Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey really turned this into a trend having their wedding and lives followed by TV cameras 24/7. No surprise that didn't work out (Nick and Vanessa just did the same thing for their wedding).
I believe the biggest change has been the internet and devices with the internet, there is so much information and users are eating it up as fast as it can be produced. In a quest to get higher ratings and more pageviews, companies are trying to gain as much access as possible to celebs. This is leading to TV stations, magazines and websites to pay absurd amounts of money to sponsors these weddings.
This leads me to the Kardashian wedding, it is so hyped and the supposed price tag is at $10 million. It appears that due to Kim's business savvy and overall celebrity appeal, she is not going to pay a dime for this, which is mind blowing to me. (please keep in mind that Kim is famous for being famous, she is most well known for a homemade video tape.) Through the TV special, twit pics and product placements, the wedding is all going to be paid for. I think Kim is very business savvy, but at what point does this stop? Is this going to start a trend where every celeb is going to have a reality show?
What if the $10 million dollars was donated to hundreds of couples that are unable to have a wedding, nevermind their dream wedding? I understand this is a business and everyone involved is in this to make money, but I feel due to how big the Kim and Kris wedding and the Royal Wedding were, that the internet and TV are going to be flooded with celeb reality shows/weddings that we do not care about.
